Small fruits turn black in winter.

Green to grayish-brown, develops square scales with age.

In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).

Moderate. Early pruning to train a good shape. Regular pruning needed less frequently with age.

Roots may buckle sidewalk. Susceptible to verticillium wilt and armilleria. Drops leaves heavily in early spring. Creates a lot of litter.
- Notable Traits:
Native to China, Japan, and Taiwan. Leaves are aromatic when crushed. Camphor is distilled from the leaves and twigs.
