Evergreen; upright canopy with weeping branches.
- Foliage:
Gray-green to blue-green leaves, 3-6" long, lanceolate leaves. Turn bronze in winter but remain on the tree.
- Flower:
Pink, red, or magenta flowers grouped 3-7 in 5-6" umbels. Fall to late spring.
- Fruit:
Persistent goblet-shaped black capsules, 3/8" in size.
- Bark:
Rough and fissured; nearly black except for orange reveals in fissures.
- Watering:
In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
- Tree Care:
Moderate. Early pruning to train a good shape. Regular pruning needed less frequently with age.
- Tolerance:
Drought (once established), any soil (must drain), some shade, medium winds.
- Special Considerations:
Gets chlorotic in wet, heavy soils. Tall tree not appropriate under power lines. Big basin is necessary.
- Notable Traits:
Native to Australia. Sweet flower nectar is attractive to bees. Beautiful flower display.
