“Under the canopy of the trees, daily dramas and moving love stories are played out. Here is the last remaining piece of Nature, right on our doorstep.”
― Peter Wohlleben, The Hidden Life of Trees |
Like us, you may be enjoying the much-needed rainy season and noticing hints of spring, such as the fragrant blossoms on the Sweet Michelia (Magnolia doltsopa). Among their many gifts, trees herald a new season, and new hope.
We love trees for as many reasons as there are individuals, but in conversations with our community we hear one thing consistently: we want future generations to discover the love — and enjoy the benefits — of trees. Tree planting is a gift to ourselves AND the future.
Loving our urban forest means investing in its growth;
please invest by making a gift to FUF today
San Francisco’s estimated tree canopy coverage is only 13.7% — well behind most major U.S. cities. We must plant tens of thousands more before the City’s streets are fully stocked and all San Franciscans are enjoying the vital benefits that trees provide. For a city with a reputation for environmental leadership, we’re shockingly under-treed!
Of course, building a thriving urban forest takes more than love. From outreach to education to planting, our staff is working hard — without volunteer support, due to the pandemic — to replace concrete with trees and sidewalk gardens throughout the city. Thanks to their dedication, we’re on track to plant 1,100 trees this year.
But love is at the heart of our work — and not just love of trees. We’re growing the urban forest because we love San Francisco, for which it serves as “green infrastructure.” We love the pollinators and other wildlife that depend on the urban forest. And we love our fellow San Franciscans, for whom it provides so many physical and mental health benefits.
In recent months it’s seemed that love is in short supply.
Let’s show love by planting more trees — for everyone’s benefit.
And so we’re asking you to express your love with a donation for your urban forest. Whether you wish to offset our carbon footprint, or mitigate the effects of climate change, or provide a better future for generations to come, please give today so we can plant the trees we so urgently need.
