- Foliage:
Dark green, serrated, lobed leaves, 1-2" long. Fall foliage is soft red and orange; tree is bare November - March.
- Flower:
Bright scarlet 1/2" flowers hang in clusters 2-3" across, bloom March - May.
- Fruit:
Distinctive red berries 3/8" across form in summer and drop, or are eaten by birds, in fall.
- Bark:
Rough, brown bark with 1" thorns on branches.
- Watering:
In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
- Tree Care:
Moderate. Requires regular pruning to establish and maintain central leader and good structure. Can require some pest control. You may wish to cut off thorns from lower branches to prevent injuries.
- Tolerance:
Sandy soils.
- Special Considerations:
Prefers sun and warmth. Subject to aphids, fireblight and leaf spot. Berries can be messy. Not tolerant of strong winds, fog, or salt air. Needs good drainage.
- Notable Traits:
Native to Europe and North Africa. Good flower display in spring and berries are attractive on the bare winter branching. Good tree for 2x3' basins and beneath overhead wires. Thorns can help deter vandalism. Attracts birds.
