Semi-deciduous; irregular form; light canopy.
- Foliage:
Light green, fernlike, 10-12" long compound leaves with small oval leaflets. In fall, some foliage yellows and drops; new foliage may appear quickly or branches may remain bare until bloom.
- Flower:
Lavender flower clusters 6-8" long, bloom April-July.
- Fruit:
Flat, round, brown seed pods 1-2" long develop in fall, eventually drop.
- Bark:
Smooth brown bark.
- Watering:
In general, 15-20 gallons per week for the first 2 years; 15-20 gallons twice a month for the 3rd year; as needed after 3 years (varies by soil, sun, and wind conditions).
- Tree Care:
Moderate. Early pruning needed to establish and maintain central leader. Requires removal of suckers. Sidewalk clean-up of flower and fruit drop.
- Tolerance:
Sandy soil.
- Special Considerations:
Does not tolerate strong winds, fog, cold or poor drainage. Limited planting area in San Francisco. Even in warmer microclimates, may not look its best in certain years if weather does not cooperate. Can get aphids and sooty mold.

Native to Brazil. Flowers are attractive and attract birds and bees.
